Sonia Bompastor: Chelsea Women head coach signs new contract until 2030

Chelsea Women boss Sonia Bompastor has signed a new contract until 2030.

The decision comes even though Chelsea are set to miss out on their first Women's Super League title since 2019.

Chelsea are 12 points behind WSL leaders Manchester City, with just eight matches remaining, after a 5-1 defeat to the runaway leaders last weekend.

After the game, Bompastor admitted that if the club's hierarchy did not feel she was the right person for the job, she would go.

However, Chelsea have decided to stand by their head coach in a statement of intent.

"Renewing her contract reflects our belief in her leadership, her vision, and the stability she brings to the club," said Chelsea directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstantley.

"There is still a lot to play for this season as we continue to compete for all major trophies. We are very excited for Sonia and the team for the next phase both in the short and long term."

In her press conference on Friday, Bompastor herself said she felt the support of the club - despite the current disappointment in the league.

"I still feel the support of the club," she said. "It has been clear. I don't feel under pressure.

"With the language barrier I maybe didn't express that correctly after the [Man City] game. But the support has been unbelievable.

"They support the women's team. They support me and the players. I have no doubt about that."

It's been a really odd time at Chelsea in recent weeks. Recent defeats to Arsenal and Man City make it back-to-back losses in the league for the first time in 11 years.

It's also rare territory for Bompastor, who lost back-to-back matches for the very first time in her managerial career, which has lasted nearly 200 games.

But Chelsea deciding to stand by their head coach may just be the boost this team needs in their lowest moment this decade.

While the league title looks set for a new destination, there is plenty left for Chelsea to play for this season. Form needs to turn round quickly as Manchester United lie in both the FA Cup fifth round and the League Cup final, while the Champions League last eight begins at the end of March.

Claim an elusive first Champions League title and thoughts about the current league situation will go away almost instantly. Chelsea have the best squad in Europe so maybe the WSL being parked to one side could be a blessing.

But this new contract is a message to Chelsea's rivals: there is still belief in the Bompastor project. They won't be going away any time soon.
