Oscar and Henry is her younger twin brother. She went to the ‘Presbyterian Ladies' College’ and ‘Shenton College’. From her childhood she always wanted to be an actress.

Ward’s modeling career was started without any plan. There was a modeling competition in Australia named ‘Search for a Supermodel’. She went there for her friend. But she was selected for the competition. Though she did not win the title, but attract the attention of ‘Vivien's Model Agency’. At the age of 15, she first ramp walk for ‘Australian Fashion Week’ which was in 2003. One year later, she worked with Miuccia Prada the famous designer of Prada.

She was chosen as the face for ‘Obsession Night’ perfume of ‘Calvin Klein’ replacing Kate Moss. Later, she also worked with Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Burberry, Balenciaga, Dior and Hermès. After Elle Macpherson, she became the next famous star from Australia. Ward took a break in 2008 for five years.

Gemma Ward dated the Australian actor and comedian Heath Ledger. They started dating in 2007. But unfortunately, Ledger passed away on 22nd January, 2008. Ward is now in a relation with David Letts. They are the parents of two beautiful children, a daughter and a son.
